Applications are being accepted for an Assistant Public Defender at the Office
of the Chief Public Defender in the Complex Litigation Unit. This specialty unit
was created in 2021 to handle the most serious complex criminal cases and to
provide consultation and trial service support for attorneys statewide. The unit
currently consists of a Director, an Investigator III, and an Administrative
Assistant. The successful candidate will assist the Director with the handling
of complex cases on a statewide basis, and with identifying, developing, and
raising larger-impact issues for litigation and motions practice. The successful
candidate will also provide support to Division attorneys in forensic evidence
analysis, which will include consultation on cases that involve DNA evidence,
digital/cellular evidence, the use of medical and/or psychological experts, and
potentially other forensic disciplines. The successful candidate will also serve
as an important resource statewide to less experienced Division attorneys as
they prepare for, and handle, trials. The Complex Litigation Unit works closely
as a collaborative team, and the successful candidate must be an experienced
trial lawyer who will actively participate in brainstorming, creative litigation,
and is committed to mentoring and supporting less experienced attorneys.
